Chapter 20

I was going to drop Lucy home first, but she needed me to take her to the store. Before Nique got out of the car, she made a smart comment. I wasn’t paying Nique any attention, but Lucy was bothered by it. I shook my head and drove off.

“What store do you need to go to?”

“I don’t need to go anywhere, I just wanted to talk to you about something.”

“About what Lou?” I asked.

“About your fake ass home girl, Nique.”

“WHAT!?” I quickly lowered my voice because I knew Hakeem was going to wake up. I turned in my seat to check on him and he was still sound asleep and sucking on his thumb.

“What do you mean my fake friend?” I asked.

“You want to know how I really knew you’re involved with Hitta? It’s because Nique was talking about you to someone and it got back to me.”

I rubbed my cheek and began to chuckle.

“I’m starting to wonder if Nique is a friend or an enemy. An enemy stabs you in the back right? Is gossiping behind my back considered backstabbing me?” I asked.

“I don’t know, but a friend isn’t something I would call her. Nique is fake, but I’m pretty sure you know that,” Lucy said.

“I knew it when she was telling everyone you were pregnant,” I said.

“So why are you still friends with her?”

“Because it’s easier for me to creep with Hitta and she keeps me entertained,” I laughed.

“Just watch your back with her. That girl has been trouble since we were in the second grade. Always running her mouth and gossiping. I’ve never met a person who just spreads so much of people’s business,” Lucy said.

“Me and you both, but it is what it is. I tell her what I want her to know, nothing too personal.”

“I feel you, but what’s really up with you and Hitta?” Lucy asked.

“He’s good people, but the age gap is killing us. I haven’t hid this much in my life Lucy. I know I can be a top-paying private investigator.”

“Girl, you are crazy, but that’s how it is. I remember hiding from my parents when John and I first got together. If you thought they hated him before, they really hate him now,” Lucy said.

“Is Lincoln taking John’s spot?” I asked.

“Girl, a guy that makes $7.25 an hour can take John’s spot. This relationship with John is becoming too much. It’s draining me financially and physically, but he doesn’t see it like that. He thinks that’s what I’m supposed to do because I’m his woman. I didn’t want to say anything in front of Nique, but Lincoln and I are fooling around,” Lucy said.

“What? Really? Since when?”

“About three months now. I know what you’re going to say, ‘He’s a hoe, he’s this and that,’ but I actually like him. I don’t want to be in a relationship with him, but he helps me out financially and I love his company.”

“I am the last person to make judgment on anyone’s situation. Lincoln is no better than Hitta.
